St. Joseph's Prep Names New Chief Development Officer
St. Joseph’s Prep President Rev. John W. Swope, SJ ’72 announces the selection of Elizabeth “Betsy” Courtney as the school’s new Chief Development Officer. She will begin her tenure on August 1. Courtney has had a long and successful career in educational fundraising most significantly at Saint Joseph’s University where she worked for 10 years. Since January 2015, she has been Chief Development Officer at New Jersey’s Bancroft, a leading service-provider for children and adults with autism, other intellectual or developmental disabilities or those in need of neurological rehabilitation. Courtney replaces Michael Larkin who stepped down in May due to personal reasons.
“We’re so pleased to bring someone to our team at Betsy's level of skill and ability,” says Fr. Swope. “She comes to the Prep with energy, purpose and an impressive background. I am personally excited to join with her in continuing to build a culture of philanthropy among our constituents.”
At Saint Joseph’s University, Courtney worked in the Office of University Advancement where she held several high-level fundraising positions and created the Loyola Society Executive Council—a parent leadership group—which grew significantly in just three years under her direction. She has experience in all aspects of fundraising and a proven track record surrounding prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation, as well as mentoring and leading successful teams.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Prep and developing a strategy that will increase fundraising efforts and lay the foundation for the next campaign. St. Joseph’s Prep is an incredible community with loyal and dedicated alumni who are committed to Ignatian ideals. As a Prep parent, it has been a second home for my family and I can’t wait to get started in this new role,” says Courtney, a graduate of the University of Scranton and the mother of four children (Brian, Kevin ’08, Brendan ’10 and Meaghan, a junior at Fordham University). “With Fr. Swope’s leadership, we are poised to add the next chapter of this great Philadelphia institution and I am very happy to play a part in it.”
Prior to her time at SJU, Courtney was Director of Alumnae at Mount St. Joseph Academy where her team was responsible for a 30% increase in alumnae participation and a successful $6 million capital campaign. At Bancroft, she increased Development dollars from $1.2 million to over $7 million in her first year there while also developing a strategic plan for a $12 million capital campaign.
Joseph A. DiAngelo, Jr., Dean of the Haub School of Business at SJU, worked closely with Courtney during her time on Hawk Hill. “St. Joseph’s Prep is lucky to have Betsy Courtney leading their Development efforts,” he says. “With her strategic initiatives and ability to build long-lasting relationships, she will take the Prep to another level of philanthropy that will form a solid foundation for years to come.”Courtney will lead the Prep’s Development Office as the School looks to increase its endowment and also enhance its physical plant. She will also advise Fr. Swope as part of the President’s Leadership Team. Courtney and her husband Ed live in Conshohocken and they served as chairs of the Crew Parents Club while their sons were students at the Prep.
